Your story, knowledge and making stuff happen

Tom's Letter

Hey friends 👋

Here are 3 takeaways from business, life and travel this week in under 5 minutes.

The world wants to hear your story

One thing I’ve noticed writing for 8 figure founders: telling the world what you’ve done doesn’t come naturally to everyone.

I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve had a client tell me about a previous achievement - whether it’s a multimillion-dollar exit or completing an Iron Man - and they feel weird talking about it.

Sure, great content shouldn’t just be talking about yourself.

But the easiest place to start when growing your personal brand as a founder- is to talk about your founding story.

And if it makes you feel uncomfortable just remember:

  • People buy into stories

  • Most people won’t even see it

  • The true fans you want to attract need to hear it

It doesn’t matter if you’ve been creating content for a while or just starting. Make it easy for your audience to understand you which means talking about:

  • What you’ve done

  • What you’re doing now

  • Where you’re going next

I’m no 8-figure founder (yet?!) but here’s an essay I wrote on my backstory and my first business “success”.

If you’re strapped for time and need some help building your personal brand, then let’s talk.

Don’t take your knowledge for granted

I had a chat with an aspiring writer this week. I mentioned the term “copy work” assuming they knew what it was. But turns out they had no idea.

I explained while being reminded that we all take knowledge for granted because it’s so obvious to us. But there was a time when it wasn’t.

So next time you’re stuck for content ideas, ask yourself what’s something you think is obvious to you, but wasn’t 2 years ago?

Someone on a similar path but further behind wants to know that information.

And if you’re also wondering what copy work is- it’s basically where you sit down and handwrite copy from some of the greats. Word for word.

I recommend building a library of content you love that you can study (DM me if you want mine).

A recent favorite is David Protein. The founder was on MFM this week (great episode) and their copy sings. No jargon, conversational tone and tells you exactly what it does.

65 days left in the year

This might be a slightly type-A way of thinking. But I heard how many days are left in 2024, I sat up straight.

Whatever it is you set out to do at the start of the year, well this is the home stretch to land that plane.

Here’s how I like to approach a sprint:

  • Remind myself of “the thing” - get specific

  • Say no to everything else (be okay with chaos in other areas)

  • Up the intensity on a single lever moving task- big action creates big results.

For me, it’s taking my ghostwriting business to the next level. What’s yours?
