The Spice Of Life

12 spicy truths to improve your bank account and mindset.

Welcome back to Tom Scourfield’s weekly newsletter where I give you high-quality insights on building cashflow companies through content creation. Plus some wisdom nuggets to improve your mental state.

I’ve felt a little spicy this week 🌶

We’re talking Nando’s extra hot kind of spice (that’s the world’s greatest chicken shop for my American friends wondering what I’m talking about).

Maybe it’s the lack of sleep. Maybe it was the full moon. Or maybe it was the fact that I’m back in the UK and surrounded by cynics and grey weather.

Whatever it is, I’ve had some big realisations which are a little out there. Today I want to share them with you to help you grow in your business and personal life.

Here you go…

  1. Friends text you back.
Yes, we’re all busy. But friendships are like relationships, they require work and commitment. Hold you and your friends to a high standard and stick to it. If they don’t match your energy, simply reduce your effort.

  2. The newsletter bubble is here.
Thousands are popping up every day. But the number closing down isn’t spoken about. Too many are built with people who didn’t mean to subscribe in the first place. Here’s how to avoid that happening to you.

  3. Introvert or not, you need a community.

My life changed when I questioned if I was actually introverted or do my friends just suck? The number of men who say they have zero close friends in 2020 had shot up to 15%. Mr. Olympia legend Chris Bumstead said he would not have been able to achieve what he’s done on his own. Stop trying to go it alone and find a community. The best place to start is the Internet.

  4. Pessimism is a poison, avoid it like the plague.
I love the saying: “The sceptics get to be right but the optimists get to be rich”. Enough said. Find the people who radiate enthusiasm and stick to them like glue.

  5. The 4-hour workday is over idolised.
Especially for a young person. It’s hard to through shade on this as I followed this blueprint for a while. It was novel for some time, but ultimately, sitting around on a beach, especially in your 20s, is not something that serves you. Instead, it’s a time to be experiencing as much as possible through different experiments.

  6. Build now and enjoy later.
This links to the previous point: building is a lot easier when you’re younger. Whether it’s health or wealth, it helps to get a head start.

  7. Your standards are what you tolerate.
Straight out of the Jocko Willink playbook. Save yourself decision fatigue and also live by higher standards by defining what they are, and cutting anything which doesn’t meet them.

  8. Tomorrow never comes.
The “I’ll start tomorrow” mindset kills dreams. How you spend your days is how you spend your life. Not everything can be done immediately, but there is some form of action you can start taking right now.

  9. You don’t have a business problem, you have a “you” problem.
There’s a famous Jim Rohn quote: “Work on yourself more than your business”. There’s unlimited business advice out there that anyone can follow. The reason you might not be seeing results is likely something internal like fear of failure or low self-esteem. Dig into those feelings and fix them. Your mind and your bank account will benefit.

  10. Burying your feelings is not cool.
It’s okay to feel triggered. But drop the macho act and get to the route cause. Being vulnerable and able to clearly communicate your feelings is the standard we should all live by. The world would be a better place if we all did this.

  11. If you’re not happy with a coffee in the sun, something is off.
Learn to appreciate the small things like the moments in between the moments. If you’re always chasing something bigger and better, then you’re just in a different rat race. The truth is it never comes. Be happy with less. Everything else is a bonus.

  12. The bar is lower than you think.
The thing you’re really missing is intensity. You know what to do, but you need to do more of it. Getting 90% of the way to your goals is just upping your input. Stop looking for silver bullets and start doing the boring tasks on repeat. You’ll quickly overtake a lot of people.

If you think having more emails on your list would give you more revenue, then let’s chat. I have a few spots left this month for brands and creators looking to implement Email-Based Courses into their businesses. I’ll ghostwrite the entire course specifically for your brand.
