It was a beautiful summer afternoon as I strolled down some windy stairs towards the beach. There wasn’t a cloud in the sky, it was a toasty 32 degrees (89 for my US friends) and the golden sand was calling me.

I felt like I was in a movie. I had everything I could ask for at that moment. Friends, amazing weather and scenery so good it doesn’t seem real.

Yet just 1 month prior, things felt more mundane. My life was very similar to what it was at this moment, yet there was 1 difference.

What made the difference?

Have you ever asked what could make such a difference to a person’s outlook, well-being and fulfilment in just 30 days? It isn’t a magic pill or a time machine.

The difference lies in the environment and the energy which it brings us to allow us to thrive.

Your environment can cause you to simply survive, or thrive.

In my case, I chose to jump on a plane and leave rainy England in early January. I stepped off the plane into peak summer in Cape Town where my life changed forever.

Ever since that moment 18 months ago, I’ve been travelling around the world while building my companies.

Here is my ultimate Nomad blueprint to help you change your life:

The view from my gym in Medellín.

Network like a pro.

Community is key, especially when travelling.

My best experiences have been when I had friends around me.

Start by:

  • Researching nomad groups.

  • Speaking to strangers.

  • Attending events.

Get comfortable doing this for the best experience and to form potentially life-changing connections. For context, my current girlfriend and some of my closest friends came about because I spoke to strangers during my nomad times.

Pack only the essentials.

Travel light to make life easier. You don’t want excess stuff weighing you down.

Bring your essentials which you can only purchase in your home country, the rest you can buy when you arrive if you really need them.

Keep mental space free for deeper experiences.

My top 3:

  1. Supplements. (AG1’s mostly- only available in Europe and the US)

  2. Headphones. (Essential for deep work)

  3. Pillows. (I’m picky and you never know what you’ll get at an Airbnb)

Prioritise your energy.

Keep your energy high and ground yourself as soon as you arrive somewhere:

  • Stay close to a gym.

  • Walk barefoot in the grass.

  • Look for ice baths/saunas.

  • Walk barefoot in the grass.

It can be easy to neglect your health when travelling so make it a priority. I also avoid night flights to minimise sleep disruption and make sure to get a workout in as soon as I arrive. This helps me stay grounded and beat jetlag.

Become an Airbnb wizard:

My rules for finding the perfect home:

  1. Book into a nice hotel for the first few days.

  2. Go visit an Airbnb in person.

  3. Scope out what road they’re on and what’s nearby.

  4. Make an offer for a long-term stay.

Finding a comfortable home can make or break your experience.

Just to add: always go through Airbnb and make sure you walk the street before committing. Yes, you can get great deals by booking ahead, but you don’t really know a place until you’ve been there in person. I’ve been caught out by ending up next to a construction site or nearly being scammed.

Surrender to the experience.

Structure is great but allows you wiggle room for new experiences.

Sometimes it’s necessary to go with the flow to discover new places and experiences.

Put yourself out there and immerse yourself in what feels right, this is how you make great memories.

Say yes to the invite for dinner with a group. Approach the stranger you admire. Live like a local.

Plan every detail of your trip.

It takes time to settle in a new place so be patient.

There are some things you can do ahead of time to make life easier:

  • Research amenities.

  • Know where you’ll work, eat and play.

  • Familiarise yourself with the local area.

Remember you can’t control everything, so expect some bumps.

Leverage the online world for offline experiences.

The internet is the ultimate space to make connections and learn local knowledge. Its superpower shows when you can apply that offline and meet up in person with like-minded people.

Use Twitter and other platforms to make connections and find your local network.

There you have it. Follow these rules for the ultimate nomad experience. If you’re on the fence, just book the plane ticket and make it happen. Worst case, you fly home.

I frequently get asked where I’ve been and where I liked the most. My top 3 destinations:

  1. Cape Town.

  2. Barcelona.

  3. Medellín.
