Sunday Stories: Adversity, compassion and community

How to find inner courage when you need it most...

Hey folks 👋

TLDR:

Expect the unexpected. Be kind to yourself while still moving forward. Find your tribe and lean into the power of community.

Courage Is Calling.

I was going about my Monday as usual when I got a phone call with some unexpected news (and some extra cortisol for good measure). The kind that makes you stop and think "Wait is this happening". I'll save that story for another time.

The point is, that we'll all get these moments through our lifetime when adversity hits us. It doesn't have to be a bad thing though, not unless you let it.

It's not about the adversity itself, it's about how you dance with it. You can’t just brush it off, nor can you let it suffocate you. It’s a fine line to walk.

And then, there was this moment of clarity. It hit me – being kind to yourself isn't a luxury; it's essential. We're often our own worst critics, right? But this week, I learned to say, “It's okay, let’s take this one step at a time.” Compassion isn't just about understanding others; it's also about understanding yourself.

Community: My Favorite Remedy

In the midst of a busy week, I still found 15 hours for group calls, Facetimes and coffee with friends and family. Each conversation was a reminder of how powerful it is to connect, to share, and to support each other. Even if the person you're speaking to doesn't understand your challenges, it's healthy just to voice things. So even if you need to speak to a wall, then do it. You'll hear yourself speaking and start to rationalise things from an outer perspective.

The Game Plan

If you're facing some struggles right now or you just want to be prepared for the future, here's a plan of action:

  1. Build in time to process: let the emotions out. Don't label them, just write them down and understand what they're telling you.

  2. Talk to yourself more than you listen: create a healthy inner dialogue.

  3. Be kind to yourself and don't expect perfection every day.

  4. Do what you need to do to move forward.

  5. Lean into your community.

Remember, a rich and meaningful life comes with highs and lows. That's part of the package. Learn to see it as a blessing, stay grateful and keep going.
