3 Tools I Use Daily As a Writer

Tom’s Letter
I’m an advocate for keeping things simple. So here are 3 of my favourite tools I use to improve my writing and stay productive as a writer:
The Average American Reader Test
The most common mistake I see in digital writing is using complex jargon. The smarter you try to sound, the less likely you’ll engage readers.
Instead, write as if you were trying to explain something to a 5th grader.
The best copy is simple, written like a human and flows naturally.
You can quickly score your copy using a free tool called Hemingway.
Clean Up Your Content Diet
We all know how easy it is to fall down a social media rabbit hole and waste hours.
My advice to prevent this is to avoid relying on willpower alone.
It’s hard to beat the scientists behind these apps trying to grab your attention.
But there is a lot of useful content that is great for ideas and learning.
So I recommend an app called Reader.
You can easily save posts, emails and blogs to a read-it-later feed.
The rule: only consume media through this app. It’s pre-vetted and you won’t get distracted by cat videos.
Weekly Planning Life Hack
For years I tried to master digital productivity apps. You name it, I’ve tried it and failed. Sure they have their place.
I still use Notion for larger projects.
But to keep track of my day-to-day tasks, pen and paper are still unbeatable.
I recently got these neat minimalist planner cards.
Every week I write my goal and plot out the most important tasks for each day.
They’re always visible so I can instantly see what I’m meant to be working on.
